Festival season continues in Galway as Cúirt International Festival of Literature takes centre stage from 23rd – 30th April 2017.

As part of this year’s stellar festival line up, Tigh Nora – Galway’s newest Gin Bar – will host ‘Joyce’s Love Letter’s to Nora’, a theatrical reading of James Joyce’s Love Letters to Nora Barnacle at 3pm on Wednesday 26th, Thursday 27th and Friday 28th April 2017 in Tigh Nora, Cross Street, Galway. Tigh Nora is actually named after Nora Barnacle, the wife and inspiration of James Joyce, who is arguably Ireland’s most influential and celebrated writer.
Nora was a Galway girl and grew up just around the corner from the bar, passing by the street the bar is located on every day on her way to school and to visit her family. In fact Nora’s fondness for Gin is the reason that Tigh Nora is predominantly a Gin bar today.
In her late teens Nora moved to Dublin where she met James Joyce and he instantly fell madly in love with her. The day they met, Thursday 16th June 1908, is now celebrated annually as ‘Bloomsday’ which is also the day depicted in James Joyce’s famous novel Ulysses.
It’s often argued that James Joyce would not have been the writer he became without meeting Nora Barnacle, they began a passionate relationship that defined Joyce as such a master of words and his readings reflect this admiration. Live actors will be used in this engaging performance of ‘Joyce’s Love Letters to Nora’ to depict this intense, intimate and often inspiring relationship that developed between Joyce and Barnacle through written word and song, and promises to be a highlight of the festival programme.
